Inside the Mind of аvilo's CEO: Steinar's Leadership and Life
Hello Steinar, how are you today?
Hello! I’m good, thanks for asking. Currently on the train on my way to Oslo for several exciting client meetings.
Can you share a bit about your background and how you got started with avilo?
I'm an IT architect educated in IT security. After running a business for 12 years, primarily working with POS and payment systems, COVID-19 pushed me out of my comfort zone. I designed new software for various industries, and we are now gaining more market share every day. This marked the early start of the journey we are currently on.
You have a long experience running a company, can you tell me how do you stay motivated and focused as a leader, especially during challenging times?
I knew this question would come. My motivation is driven by making a difference, whether it's for industries, people, or the environment. Many people don't realize this, but being a leader can be one of the loneliest titles a person can have. There are few people we can talk to who understand the challenges of being an entrepreneur. I learned this many years after founding my first company. So, when we face challenging times, I call or meet with other leaders who have been through similar experiences. There is always light at the end of the tunnel.
As a CEO at avilo, what do your daily tasks include?
To be honest, there are too many to mention in this interview. As a leader, I am working towards a less operational role so I can better focus on my core tasks in the future. This shift will allow me to concentrate on strategic planning, innovation, and fostering a strong company culture. By delegating day-to-day operations to a capable team, I can ensure that we continue to grow and adapt to new challenges while staying true to our mission and values.
You have a demanding role and a busy schedule. How do you like to unwind or spend your free time when you're not working?
Four out of five days a week, I'm busy helping out as a children's coach in handball and football. My daughter plays handball, and my son plays football. It's a great way to disconnect from work. I love to travel and spend quality time with my family. My personal hobbies include collecting shoes and bags—I spend way too much money on collectible fashion. Gaming is my way to switch off, and I usually play with my son (yes, I'm playing ranked). I also enjoy American sports and regularly watch the NFL (Go Buffalo Bills) and the NHL (Let's go Panthers).
Do you have a favorite book or movie that you always recommend to others?
Yes, of course! The movie "The Shawshank Redemption" and the book "Our Iceberg Is Melting" by John Kotter. You should watch and read these two after this interview.
I definitely will, lastly is there anything else you would like to say to our readers?
Don't put yourself in a situation where you regret something you didn't do 10 years ago. And last but not least, invest in dedicated people, and they will invest in you—both in your private and professional life.
