From Freelance to Full-Time: Olga’s Creative Journey at avilo

Hi, Olga! We’re so happy to catch up with you today! How are you doing and where are you at the moment?

I'm doing great, I am in Bahrain and now it's the perfect time here to enjoy outdoor activities after work.

That sounds wonderful! It’s always great to be able to enjoy outdoor activities after work. Can you tell us a bit about your role at avilo and how you started working here?

It was 3 years ago, in October 2021. I had been working as a freelance UI designer for some time and then received an offer to join the project from Steinar. The project was interesting and useful (which is important for me) and I decided to join. We started to work on one project but then it grew to many different work cases and took me more and more time, the company also grew, so eventually I started to work here full-time.

It’s amazing to hear how your journey with avilo evolved! What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do here?

I think it's an opportunity to do something that many people will use. And make it not only useful but also beautiful and unique. I hear the idea and do, as people say, some "magic" turning words into real visualization. In a way, it also helps me satisfy my need for creativity.

When you’re not designing, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? How do you like to unwind and recharge?

I'm a coffeeholic, so just let me stay in a nice place with a cup of coffee for a while and I'll be ready to get back to the routine again.

Coffee seems to be your go-to for recharging! What’s one thing you do to stay inspired and keep your creativity flowing?

Other designers, design platforms, and sometimes workshops. Actually, design is everywhere now, so I just need to be observant and pay attention to the details.

It’s great that you stay observant and attentive to details. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the design field?

Probably the key for beginners is to find a school/mentor they can trust and another piece of advice is try to replicate the designs you like, it helps to grow skills.

Great tips, what do you think is the most rewarding part of being a designer?

See the design live and get positive feedback from users.

And lastly, if you could give one life advice to your younger self, what would you say?

Try everything you would like to try, but are afraid.
Today it’s scary but tomorrow is already normal.
